The development and organization of isotope-based medical research is identified as a goal to be promoted in the Cabinet Office’s “Action Plan for the Promotion of Production and Use of Radioisotopes for Medical Purposes,” making it a highly important issue.

Currently, active development is underway in targeted isotope therapy, in which therapeutic agents labeled with alpha- or beta-emitting nuclides are accumulated in lesions of patients with malignancies and treated using radiation with high biological effectiveness. In this field, it is essential to develop compounds, evaluate their therapeutic effects, refine drug administration methods, assess pharmacokinetics, and evaluate damage to normal tissues—particularly radiation exposure. Additionally, when providing treatments clinically, it is important to evaluate each patient’s suitability for the specific therapeutic agent.

For these evaluations, nuclear medicine functional imaging (PET, SPECT, scintigraphy), in addition to CT and MRI, is extremely useful. In the field of functional imaging diagnostics, research must advance not only in the development of imaging agents but also in basic small-animal studies of candidate agents, clinical PET trials (microdosing studies), expansion of new indications for existing agents, construction of pharmacokinetic parameter images through optimized imaging protocols, quality improvement of imaging, and development of minimally invasive imaging methods.

In our department, we conduct cross-disciplinary and translational research on both imaging methods and targeted isotope therapies, collaborating with Osaka University Institute of Radiation Sciences and industry partners.

Text in Japanese Aiming for new clinical applications of radioisotopes Development of novel functional imaging […]
