In fact, when I was a student, I originally wanted to be a cardiologist.
The turning point was during my initial training. I met a truly wonderful supervisor in the Department of Gastroenterology. Not only his endoscopic skills, but also his humanity, the way he treated patients, and the way he interacted with junior doctors made me think, "This is the kind of doctor I want to be. Although he is no longer in Osaka, I still keep in touch with him regularly. Because of that doctor's influence, I became interested in the world of endoscopy and decided to pursue a career in gastroenterology.
After that, I did a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at Osaka Metropolitan Police Hospital. It was a busy time, but I was blessed with wonderful supervisors and colleagues, and it was a very fulfilling time in which I felt I was growing every day.
After completing five years of training, I was transferred to the Department of Gastroenterology at Osaka University, where I worked in the hospital wards for one year before entering graduate school and joining the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Group. However, the research did not go as smoothly as I had hoped, and I was often troubled by it.
Just around that time (around 2018), AI technology was beginning to develop rapidly. Having always been interested in PCs and programming, I decided to "give it a try myself" and started AI research. It was a challenge in a slightly different direction from my initial research theme, but my academic advisors warmly pushed me along. I was groping my way through the trial-and-error process with almost no one around me to ask for advice, but I think I was blessed with the atmosphere at the Department of Gastroenterology of Osaka University, where I could "freely challenge what I wanted to do.
He later obtained his degree in esophageal cancer AI research and has been a specially appointed assistant professor since 2023, and continues to work on AI research while performing ESD and other endoscopic treatments and ward care.

Q

Please tell us about your reasons for joining the Bureau.

One of the reasons was that I was a graduate of Osaka University and Osaka Police Hospital was an affiliated hospital of the Department of Gastroenterology of Osaka University, but the biggest reason was the doctors I met at the police hospital. However, the biggest reason was the doctors I met at the police hospital. All the doctors I respected belonged to the Department of Gastroenterology at Osaka University, and I naturally thought, "I want to work with these doctors. Another great attraction of the Department of Gastroenterology at Osaka University is that it has a wide range of affiliated hospitals in the Kansai region, many of which are active at the forefront of the field. I believe that being able to gain experience in a wide range of environments is a great advantage.

Q

Tell us about what attracts you to gastroenterology.

After all, the most important thing is that "endoscopy is interesting!" I have to admit that when I was a student, I was always sleepy during endoscopy tours. To be honest, when I was a student, I was sleepy during endoscopy tours and didn't really get into it. But when I actually became a resident and held an endoscope myself, I found it much more enjoyable than I had expected, and I was instantly drawn in by its appeal. Endoscopy is really deep and there are a great variety of techniques. The more you do, the more new discoveries you make, and you never feel like you've learned enough. Although I myself specialize in gastrointestinal cancer treatment, I still find endoscopic treatment genuinely enjoyable.
Gastroenterology also has a very wide range of areas that it deals with. We can be involved in a wide range of diseases from acute to chronic, benign to malignant tumors.
In addition, the many options for future careers are a major attraction.
