I was told by the doctors at the hospitals I visited that "Osaka University has many affiliated hospitals in Osaka and Hyogo, so you can experience a variety of hospitals." At that time, I had not yet decided on my specialty, but I wanted to belong to the medical faculty of Osaka University regardless of which specialty I would like to pursue in the future.
My two-year initial training was at Osaka Rosai Hospital. My first rotation was in gastroenterology, which included blood sampling and rounds in the morning, assisting with endoscopic examinations and liver procedures during the day, checking test results for hospitalized patients, responding to sudden deterioration of medical conditions (including urgent endoscopic examinations and liver procedures), making rounds in the evening, and explaining medical conditions to patients and their families, as it was my first rotation, It was a dizzying experience for me. Even so, I was warmly and generously guided by senior doctors and spent a very fulfilling two months. I had originally considered other departments, such as cardiology, but as I watched daily endoscopic examinations and procedures up close, I began to think, "I want to be able to do endoscopy, too. In the latter half of my rotation, I had multiple opportunities to practice gastroscopy, and I still vividly remember practicing with my classmates and seniors. Above all, gastroenterology deals with a wide variety of organs and diseases, and is based on internal medicine, which means that the first priority is the patient's general condition. I was impressed by the flexibility and care with which the senior doctors responded to each patient's condition, and felt that "I want to become a doctor like them," which was the main reason for my decision to become a gastroenterologist.
After entering the hospital, I spent one year at Kansai Rosai Hospital and two years at Osaka Rosai Hospital for the latter half of my residency. I was able to experience many cases and procedures, and was blessed with senior doctors, classmates, and juniors, making my days very fruitful.
Six years after graduation, I was transferred to the Department of Gastroenterology, Osaka University, where I spent one year working in the hospital wards before entering graduate school. Currently, I belong to the clinical research group of liver and am engaged in prospective observational research on drug therapy for fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma as a graduate student. With the cooperation of many doctors at related facilities, I am able to accumulate a large number of prospective cases, and I feel that I am in a very fortunate environment in terms of research.

Q

Please tell us about your reasons for joining the Bureau.

The fact that our department has many affiliated hospitals in Osaka and Hyogo and does not have to make major changes in the basis of its life, in addition to the opportunity to gain experience at various facilities, is very attractive in non-work-related aspects such as marriage, childbirth/child care, and nursing care.

Q

Tell us about what attracts you to gastroenterology.

The Department of Internal Medicine is able to be involved in a wide range of diseases and patients, from acute to chronic, from benign to malignant diseases, and with patients of various ages and backgrounds. The major attraction of the Department of Gastroenterology is that you can hone both your comprehensive skills as an internist and your knowledge and skills in specialized areas. In addition to working at a hospital, I think the ability to work at clinics and health checkup facilities, etc., in a variety of ways according to one's stage of life is also an appealing feature of the department that makes it possible to continue working in the field for a long time.

Q

Message to Students and Residents

I think it is not an easy task to decide on a future department during the first year or two of initial training.
