- Summary of this article：This study examined whether care needs before hospitalization predict long-term survival after stroke in older adults. Using data from 24,839 Japanese patients aged 65 years or older, the authors found that higher preadmission long-term care need levels were linked to higher 3-year mortality after discharge. The risk rose step by step as care needs increased. Pre-stroke functional status may therefore help clinicians identify high-risk patients early and plan treatment and support more appropriately.
