- Summary of this article：When someone's heart suddenly stops in a public place, bystanders can use an AED to restart it. Using a nationwide Japanese registry of cardiac arrests from 2022-2023, researchers compared 1,664 matched pairs of patients. Those who received public-access defibrillation before ambulances arrived were about 1.5 times more likely to survive one month with good brain function. The benefit held whatever the timing of the shock, showing that bystander AED use saves lives.
