- Summary of this article：Geographic atrophy, an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration, may differ between ethnic groups. Researchers compared 125 eyes from Caucasians in Hawaii, Japanese Americans in Hawaii, and Japanese in Japan. Caucasians more often had disease in both eyes, more atrophy patches, larger affected areas and thinner choroids than Japanese in Japan, while Japanese Americans fell in between. The findings suggest that both genetic and environmental influences shape this sight-threatening disease.
