- Summary of this article：How much dialysis care has improved over 50 years was unknown. Using a registry covering all dialysis facilities in Okinawa, Japan (1971-2020; 15,698 adults), researchers tracked survival. Mortality fell markedly across the decades - down to about one-fifth for patients within their first three years of dialysis - while gains for long-term patients slowed after the 2000s, and death rates stayed higher than in the general population. Supporting people on long-term dialysis remains a key challenge.
