Yu Sato (graduate student), a research group led by Dr. Naohiro Kodama (Professor) and others has revealed that pre-treatment serum CA9 levels serve as a biomarker for predicting the efficacy of atezolizumab/bevacizumab—the standard first-line treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma—and has further discovered that the CA9 molecule may be involved in treatment resistance.

The results of this research were published online in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer, the journal of the American Association for Immunotherapy of Cancer, on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
