Q
Please tell us about your progress to date.
I grew up in Kagoshima until high school and entered Osaka University School of Medicine. After graduation, I did my initial training at the Osaka Acute & Comprehensive Medical Center, followed by training as a gastroenterologist at the same hospital and JCHO Osaka Hospital.
I originally wanted to be involved in cancer treatment, and I also found it interesting that I could be involved in diagnosis and treatment with my own hands using endoscopes, which is why I decided to pursue a career in gastroenterology. When I actually began my training, I realized that gastroenterology encompasses many fields, including liver, biliopancreatic, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal cancer, and that it is interesting to be able to deal with not only malignant tumors but also a variety of conditions within the same department, such as immune-related chronic diseases.
Each area has its own depth, and I am currently engaged in research at the Graduate School of Osaka University, focusing on immune-related pathologies in the liver area.

Q
Please tell us about your reasons for joining the Bureau.
At the time of my initial training and entry into the department, I was considering returning to my hometown as an option. Community and remote island medicine play an important role in supporting the lives of the people in those areas, and I was greatly attracted to the fact that it requires comprehensive skills to deal with a wide range of diseases, both within and outside of specialized departments.
On the other hand, when I thought about my own future, I wanted to learn more specialized medical treatments and procedures in an environment with a large number of cases as a first step in my training as a gastroenterologist. There are many hospitals affiliated with the Department of Gastroenterology at Osaka University that are large and have a large number of cases, and the fact that I could experience a wide variety of cases while enhancing my expertise was a major deciding factor in my decision to join the department.

Q
Tell us about what attracts you to gastroenterology.
The appeal of gastroenterology, I think, is the wide range of areas it deals with.
The field that interests you as a student and the field that you are attracted to while actually seeing patients during your initial training may change little by little. In the same way, you may discover new things while practicing gastroenterology in the later stages of your training, and when you begin research, you will see diseases from a different angle than in clinical practice, which may broaden your interests. Even if you do not decide on a single specialty from the beginning, I believe that this is a department where you can encounter themes that you would like to learn more about in depth during your daily practice and training.
In the same way that gastroenterology is a department that deals with a wide range of fields, there are doctors with various interests and strengths in the medical office. There are many people with whom I can consult in my daily practice and research, and in addition to horizontal ties with my peers, vertical relationships with senior and junior colleagues naturally expand, and I feel that the ability to learn while receiving daily stimulation is a major attraction.
Osaka University has a large number of affiliated hospitals and a wealth of cases, so you can deal with a large number of patients while acquiring a high level of expertise as a clinician. In terms of research, there are many professors who are conducting world-class research not only within the Department of Gastroenterology but also within the university. The environment in which I can take on challenges at a high level, including joint research, on themes that I really want to work on, is also a major attraction of this department.
