  • Establishment of an innovative medical information system for integrated management of clinical data, medical image, and clinical specimen information

Development of an educational web content platform and an innovative medical information system in preparation for the next epidemic of emerging infectious diseases

Based on the lessons we have learned from novel coronavirus infection “COVID-19,” our course also plays a role as the division of fostering required medical human resources of the “Center for Infectious Disease Education and Research (CiDER)” established in Osaka University to prepare for the next epidemic of infection. In the division of fostering required medical human resources of CiDER, the latest technologies and knowledge on infection control and testing are taught to healthcare professionals and healthcare professionals-to-be, and human resources who will lead future infection control and develop new testing technologies are fostered.

In our course, we aim to provide an opportunity of learning correct knowledge about infections “to anyone, anywhere, and anytime” by establishing a platform to deliver educational contents to provide a wide range of technologies and knowledge required for future infection control settings as well as accurate medical information on infections. At present, “CiDER-EDU” is launched as an educational web contents platform, where an infection training program “CORE-ID” for initial residents is distributed jointly with Osaka Prefecture.

It is necessary to promptly analyze clinical specimens to prevent infections, but it is also very important to link the clinical specimens with medical information. In our course, in cooperation with the Department of Medical Informatics, we are developing and improving a clinical specimen information management system linking with the clinical data collection system and medical image collection system on the OCR-Net (Osaka Clinical Research network) that aims at establishing a system to conduct multicenter clinical research and promoting high-quality clinical trials and clinical research. In this way, we aim to build an innovative medical information system that can be a base for promptly distributing scientific evidence against emerging infectious diseases that are expected to occur one after another, through integrated management and analysis of clinical data, medical image, and clinical specimen information.

It is also expected that the knowledge obtained from the educational web content platform and establishment of the medical information system is horizontally deployed in the areas other than infectious diseases.
