What is the Databank? What does it do? Is it different from a biobank?

“Databank” is a term used by Osaka University Hospital to describe the collection and use of medical information which does not include biological specimens. Medical information which occurs during medical treatment at Osaka University Hospital includes examination histories, contents of electronic medical charts, tests, image diagnosis, prescriptions, receipt information, and DPC information. A biobank includes the storage and use of biological specimens such as blood samples, but this Databank does not contain biological specimens.
Osaka University Hospital Databank research acquires suitable consent from the patients and collects all information entered in medical charts and sample image data that was acquired in the past or will be acquired in the future, and uses it to contribute to the development of pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Why is your cooperation needed?

Development using the latest artificial intelligence (AI) and medical-related R&D that contributes to more people requires large volumes of medical information. It has become essential to conduct R&D together with external research institutions, private companies, and government agencies both in Japan and overseas that possess the latest technologies.
However, we cannot list specific countries / regions and organizations at this point as there are possibilities at where and who will utilize your medical information.

What advantages are there to providing medical information?

There are no particular immediate advantages. No fees are required for cooperating with Databank, and no payment for cooperation is provided.

What disadvantages are there to not providing medical information?

There are none. We respect the free will of the patients to decide whether or not to provide medical information. Refusal to consent will not affect on your future treatments.

Will my personal information be protected?

Osaka University Hospital pays close attention to the handling of medical records. Any personal information including patient’ s name and address will not be provided to an external entity. Personally identifiable information is deleted (or replaced), and maximum consideration is given for the data not to be personally identified when providing data to the external entity. In addition, the information management system, purpose of use, and other matters at the entities receiving information are strictly examined, and rules are in place to ensure that information cannot be provided unless certain standards are satisfied.

I was handed a consent form for cooperating with the provision of medical information. Do I have to decide now?

You may take the form home and discuss with your family before deciding. Please consider carefully and decide based on your own free will.

I once signed a consent form, but can I withdraw my consent?

Once given, consent may be withdrawn at any time. Even if consent is withdrawn, past results and presented materials which utilized your information cannot be erased, however your medical information will not be used after consent is withdrawn.

Are the entities to which the collected medical information is allocated and the contents of development disclosed?

The current status of information use will be disclosed on this website as it becomes available.

Do I or my family have any rights regarding the results of Databank research?

Depending on the research, there is the possibility that intellectual property rights may be generated. However, the ownership of these rights cannot be claimed by you or your family.
