Osaka University Hospital Databank Project

Osaka University Hospital is working for medical research and development (R&D) that will achieve better medical care to everyone.

Medical R&D ranges variety of area from identifying the causes of illness to developing new drugs and devices for treatment, all of which are essential to providing better medical care. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) and other new technologies have emerged, and it has become essential to conduct R&D together with external research institutions, industrial company, and government agencies both in Japan and overseas.
When an industrial company conducts R&D aiming for a commercialization using medical information, there is a need for accurate and advanced medical information without obtaining the consent of the patient in advance, preventing the R&D from advancing quickly.

The Osaka University Hospital Databank*1 Project aims to accumulate clinical medical data to our Databank from patients who visited our hospital in order to carry out R&D including commercialization using AI and other new technologies, either independently or jointly with other research institutions or corporations in Japan and overseas. for the purpose of a wide range of medical research, as well as R&D and commercialization of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other products*2.

We will ensure that patients understand this project well, and we will obtain their signed consent in advance. Medical information obtained from consenting patients will be anonymized, organized and categorized, and stored in the Databank. In order to utilize medical information and conduct multilateral analysis in medical R&D, the cooperation of large numbers of patients will be necessary. When we are able to collect and actively use medical information from large numbers of patients in the Databank, we expect to be able to conduct faster and better development of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other products, and contribute to the advancement of human health and medicine.
I sincerely ask the patients who visit our hospital for understanding and cooperation.

Medical information which occurs during medical treatment includes examination histories, contents of electronic medical charts, blood tests, image diagnosis, prescriptions, health claims receipt information, and DPC (diagnosis procedure combination) information.

*2: This includes research related to a wide range of diseases, development and verification of pharmaceuticals and treatment methods, and improving hospital medical care. Specifically, this includes development of treatment drugs, image diagnosis modalities, models for predicting the occurrence of illness and prognosis, models for selecting the optimal treatment or health guidance, and other matters.
